March 2023 Riversiders Meeting: Part 2
Well there was more ...Waney's Bar was open for the first time at our meetings. Marvelous! The evening kicked off with our Riversiders' business/social announcements with Mike Binder on the mic. These included news of an exclusive discount for Riversiders Members on full price merchandise purchased from the Club next season. Members will receive 12.5% discount, rather than the usual 10%. This was well received in the room.
Mike was followed by Gail Featherstone, who introduced our fine guests for the evening: Toby King (1 year contract), Jake Wardle (3 year contract), and Sean O'Loughlin O.B.E. (he's here forever as he is a club legend!).
What a revelation their interviews were by Jeanette Lusher! It was that perfect mix of serious, fun - with a few exclusives thrown in for good measure. You would have to be there to know what those are! It does not get any better if you want a unique insight into our great and historic Club. The questions and answers kept us enthralled all night.
Lockers was fresh from his investiture at Windsor Castle by Princess Anne the previous day. He received a standing ovation from the Members. Sean told us all about it and the sequence of events leading up to his royal appointment, including getting his official looking envelope!
Other subjects covered by all three of our guests were Shaun Wane's influence at Wigan at a mentor (among many other things), and how good it was to have the England Coach in situ. Wheelchair rugby was discussed and Phil Roberts was congratulated on achieving Wheelchair Coach of the Year. Jake would like to try wheelchair rugby!
Jake and Toby's pre seasons were talked about at their previous clubs in comparison to Wigan's pre season and how they were welcomed from minute one at Wigan Warriors. Jake and Toby mentioned how they were fully engaged with Wigan's links to the community and were all for getting involved...Jake had never done anything like this before. Matt Peet and his staff were praised for how much variety they bring to training. This is needed as it's a long season and variety keeps the players motivated and engaged.
In addition, the away loss at Hull Kingston Rovers was discussed and the lessons learned, along with our first home victory of the season vs Wakefield, with no points scored by the opposition! The Good Friday Derby was mentioned - both Jake and Toby can't wait for that one! The various TV stations that cover our great game were put under the spotlight for discussion.
But this isn't everything that was talked about! If you want to witness more in depth discussion you'll have to come along to our next Riversiders meeting! Many thanks to all our guests for giving us a wonderful evening, and everyone else (Committee and helpers) that made it possible.
